The Centre for Entrepreneurial Development, Alliance and Research (CEDAR)
is the pioneering Centre for Entrepreneurship in Cyprus and the first interdisciplinary
research centre working with universities and academic centres, including UCLan Cyprus.
The Centre embraces faculty and associate practitioners credited with local, regional and
global initiatives seeking to promote teaching, knowledge transfer, executive education,
research, consulting and outreach activities in the entrepreneurship discipline and related
thematic fields, including: Entrepreneurialism across business life cycles (start-ups, growing enterprises); Innovation and Corporate Entrepreneurship; Governance and Finance;
Entrepreneurial Finance - SME Business Banking; Family Business Continuity; Innovation
in Education - Entrepreneurship Education; Sustainability; Circular Economy; Regional
Development e.g. clustering, agro-farming, heritage venturing, cooperative enterprising;
alternative tourism development e.g. sport tourism etc.
The mission
of CEDAR is to act as a catalyst for entrepreneurial development by building synergies
between different areas of expertise in education, training, research and outreach
activities.
CEDAR | 3 GUIDE 2020-21.Initiatives
In cooperation with other universities and organizations interested in innovation and entrepreneurship, CEDAR has led a number of initiatives, such as:
Open forums, professional development seminars and workshops
These initiatives involve local and regional development agencies, chambers,
municipalities and business and professional associations geared to support
aspiring entrepreneurs, growing SMEs and family businesses.
Ideodromio
CEDAR in collaboration with the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute organise annually the
youth business idea competition, labelled as "IDEODROMIO", which aims to encourage
entrepreneurship in secondary education in Cyprus.
Entrepreneurship Camp
This is an annual initiative in conjunction with the UCLan Cyprus MBA programme that
aims to bring together scholars, entrepreneurship stakeholders, family entrepreneurs
and next generation leaders to exchange insights and experiences on entrepreneurial
growth routes, leadership models and innovative approaches across the stages of the
business life cycle.
International Field Trips
This initiative is part of the UCLan Cyprus MBA programme which aims to promote
study tours and network with entrepreneurial leaders across borders. The scheme stimulates entrepreneurialism through live cases of entrepreneurial ventures that lead to exchange forums taking place overseas. Previous educational field trips have taken place
in Sofia (Bulgaria) and Salzburg (Austria) while a trip to Italian family businesses will follow to highlight the aspects of entrepreneurialism across business life cycles.
CEDAR | 4 GUIDE 2020-21.Business Idea Competition
This annual initiative involves a series of idea generation workshops and start-up businesses training that culminate in the presentation of start-up ideas and their appraisal
by a panel of experts enjoying sponsorships from various partners e.g. KPMG, Alpha
Bank, Junior Chamber International (JCI Cyprus), Gravity and Koumandaris Foundation.
Panorama of Entrepreneurship
Initiative aimed at showcasing entrepreneurship programmes and initiatives in operation in Cyprus and beyond, seeking to promote the dissemination of best practice including innovative firms and best practice in terms of innovation-based strategies.
Discussion Forum
This private forum was organized and co-hosted by UCLan Cyprus, CEDAR and the
Brussels based EIASM. The aim of the forum is to expound the hidden minefield that
could jeopardise the survival and growth of family firms. The Forum was supported by
Eurobank and KPMG.
Panorama of Social Enterprise
The aim of this policy-oriented forum was to expound
the emerging models of social enterprise and review
policy support mechanisms needed to help unleash
the growth potential of social entrepreneurship. The
initiative was under the auspices of the Deputy-Ministry to the President of the Republic of Cyprus and
it was organised in collaboration with UCLan Cyprus,
Centre for SME Development-UCLan UK and the
Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Professor Panikkos Poutziouris
Chair and co-founder of CEDAR
Professor Poutziouris is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Business and Rector of UCLan Cyprus. He is an internationally recognized
academic in the field of entrepreneurship, serving for almost two decades on the Faculty of Manchester Business School - University of
Manchester (UK) as Fellow in SME Management, Senior Lecturer in
Entrepreneurship and Visiting Associate Professor for Family Business
Initiatives. Professor Poutziouris has been appointed an Honorary Fellow of the University of Cambridge Judge Business School in 2018 based on his significant contribution to
research. He lectures, trains, researches, advises and consults on entrepreneurship and
strategic development of family businesses and businesses families. Professor Poutziouris Panikkos is former President of IFERA and as active Fellow of Family Firms Institute;
he is acting as the country expert on family business and entrepreneurship policy matters, working with OECD, European Commission and other stakeholder organizations.
Dr Loukas Glyptis
Deputy Chair of CEDAR
Dr Glyptis is an Associate Professor of Accounting and the Head of the
School of Business and Management. His current research interests
are focused on the areas of inter-firm cost management and control,
accounting and control practises of shipping firms and management
accounting and control practises of family firms. He is a reviewer for
the Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management Journal while he
leads and supervises a number of research projects relating to entrepreneurship and family businesses. Dr Glyptis maintains professional memberships in the British Accounting
CEDAR | 12 GUIDE 2020-21.& Finance Association (BAFA). He is an HRDA certified Trainer on Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Decision-Makers while he is a visiting Scholar at the University of
Piraeus and the University of Aegean.
Dr Fanos Tekelas
Director of CEDAR
Dr Tekelas is a Lecturer in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the
Deputy-Course Leader of BA Hospitality and Tourism Management at
UCLan Cyprus. The basis of his research lies in examining the strategic
orientation of small and medium enterprises and family businesses. Dr
Tekelas' research interests also focus on entrepreneurial orientation and
entrepreneurial behaviour in family firms. Dr Tekelas is a reviewer for a
number of academic journals, and he maintains professional memberships in the Regional Studies Association and the Lancashire Institute for Economic and
Business Research and he is an HRDA certified trainer. He is currently representing the
Republic of Cyprus as a member of the management committee in the European Cooperation in Science & Technology, Cost Action CA16206: Empowering the next generation
of social enterprise scholars. Dr Tekelas has over 16 years of professional experience in
small family-owned hotels while he has an established network with a significant number
of family-owned hotels in Cyprus.
